An interview on MTV with Ridley Scott just popped up today, following the Space Jockey mask images we reported on yesterday. In this interview, Ridley Scott finally gives in and mentions how Prometheus is in fact a prequel to Alien.

“I have to redesign the elements that led to the thing you finally see in Alien, which is the face hugger…I don’t want to repeat it. The alien in a sense as a shape is worn out..maybe we’ll come up with something different. What we’re trying to do is squeeze in two prequels…if you explain who he was and where he came from then you want to find out where they came from and you might was to go to this place where his people come from. ” – Ridley Scott

Going by this recent update we can also now look forward to a Prometheus sequel Alien prequel. How confusing!

So Prometheus is a prequel to the Alien prequel, which will be a sequel to to Prometheus, and Alien will be a sequel to the sequel of Prometheus, which isn't or is a prequel.

LOL @Snorkalbottom! It was pretty obvious from day 1 that this was a prequel, Ridley trying to throw us off there!

Sounds to me that Prometheus is about the jockeys and Prometheus 2 will be about the Aliens, from this line...

Ufff, how exciting, I think that almost all of us were thinking about the Alien, but the real question is -What is a facehugger? -

Big bugs you say, meh! Symbiotic uneasily Gigerish grotesque territorial space bunnies, now that's worth seeing.

I don't read this as indicative that there will be two different movies, but that this is an attempt to SQUEEZE what the director feels should be two movies into one which is deeply concerning.

What came first, the face hugger or the egg? I think that Prometheus will show how the "alien" that we know came to be. I really do think that Ridley Scott is trying to get a second prequel. In my opinion, the planet in the trailer does not resemble LV426. It looks similar but to many open plains. The derelict Spaceship in on rocky surface in ALIEN, and there is no evidense of an explosion on the end of it. Maybe a different ship?

Well whatever ends up happening, whatever came out of the space jockey, has to be very big. The hole in the chest of the jockey is huge in alien and something had to lay all those eggs. Cant wait to find out.

I have a "funny feeling" that the planet in the trailer is not LV426, instead, it's our planet in a different time or alternative universe.

Yes, I agree with Dancing Frog's view that this means Prometheus will work as a sequence of 2 origin stories in 1 movie - though IMO by no means concerning.
What I find interesting is that it seems to indicate that some important answers (particularly related to the facehugger/alien) will be found before moving to the end planet, i.e. on Earth. I think this tilts somewhat the focus of what we were expecting from the movie (that most answers would be found on the end planet). Would you agree?

I'm really hoping they don't use an alternate universe as a plot device. It's getting a bit hokey these days--just when you thought you knew what was going on, blam! a time warp. They didn't have time travel in Alien, or faster-than-light travel, merely cryosleep and lots of fuel. Considering this film predates Alien, I would expect space travel to be at most equal in "tech" to Alien.

(Unless R. Scott decides that Prometheus gets to be a special ship with FTL travel. But then I'd have to question why the Nostromo wouldn't have been--you'd figure if you're a galactic corporate conglomerate mining millions of tons of material, you'd want an efficient operation where you can transport your refinery and its tug through space as quickly as possible. But I digress.)

I suspect if there is time travel/an alternate universe in Prometheus, it will be done well, and I won't have complaints. But I'd like to think they could make a compelling story without that element.

Everyone needs to just relax for a moment. All we really need to take from this is one thing....... We all going to get another Prometheus film!!!!!!!!!! This is all that matters!

As I have stated in another thread, this does not necessarily mean 2 films, it more than likely means squeezing the ideas of the origin of man and the origins of the alien into one film or more succinctly, the origin of the alien and the origin of the being responsible. Nobody really "squeezes" things into 2 films. The word means putting as much into something as you can. Makes more sense that it is one film with elements of the 2 ideas squeezed into it.

My take on it is he means there will be one film that will explain all those elements he spoke about. Im just hoping things are not rushed through otherwise he could just 'squeeze' out a turd of a film.

Having said that im all for two prequels!

Two prequels would be great. I just hope there are lots of good action scenes. I personally preffered Aliens over Alien. Either way it will be nice to see Hollywood produce another good Sci-Fi movie.

Thanks JONES for the great words. I mean my "funny feeling" was, and it really was, in a way exactly for what you wrote. In the last years, screenwriters have used, kind of an "easy exit" the pararell times and alternative universes. But you are absolutely right, if it's going to be something like that, it's going to be well done... is Sir Ridley.

I think this article is from at least a year ago. Or from a time when they were still developing the script.

I personally don't want to see any references to anything after ALIEN. ALIENS and the rest of them were just not up to par with the original. Only Ridley and Giger can do the films justice. Cameron blows.

I hope whatever the creatre is it will retain a big banana shaped head like it's predecessors.

@Jones, @Skipo: maybe it's not Prometheus that is capable of FTL, maybe it's the space jockey's ship? The scene that hints at the space jockey chair being part of a navigation system sugests that the ship is operational, so it's easy to assume that the crew of the prometheus would "tinker" with it... (hmm, I wonder what this button is for?)
